Posted on 12 Sep 2023 by Lien Hendrickx

Next week, the "FEI WBFSH Jumping World Breeding Championship For Young Horses" 2023 is scheduled to take place in Lanaken at the Zangersheide domain. This annual event highlighting the emerging talents of the show jumping sport attracts breeders, riders and horse lovers from all over the world. For us, it is the perfect timing to conduct an analysis of the champions of recent years.

Our analysis is based on the horses that have been on the podium over the past 10 years and whose youngest age group is now a minimum of 8 years old, we are looking at the results from 2010 through 2019. All the results can be found on Hippomundo on the 'Historic Results Page'.

In the 7-year-olds, more than 50% of the podium winners reached level 1.60

Looking at the percentages to the level in which the Top 3 horses grew in each age category, we see that 56.66% of the podium winners in the 7-year-olds reached the 1.60 level. In the 6-year-olds, 36.66% grow to 1.60m level and in the 5-year-olds barely 23.33%.

The 2015 winner of the 7-year-olds, Nevados S grew into the most successful show jumper of the podium winners in our analysis. With Belgium's top rider Grégory Wathelet, Nevados S, bred by Stanislaw Szurik, is still active at the very highest level and has already scored 12 victories at 1.60m or more. View here the palmares of Nevados S.

Quite a few well-known show jumpers achieved podium finishes at the World Championships in Lanaken. The breeding stallions Solid Gold Z and Grandorado TN N.O.P. were evenly matched in 2018 with a respective first and second place in the 7-year-olds under their current riders Christian Ahlmann (GER) and Willem Greve (NED). Hello Senator (Everest) we know as a successful show jumper with Scott Brash (GBR), but in 2016 the Carambole son jumped to 3rd place at the World Championship in the 7-year-olds under the saddle of Luc Steeghs (NED). The top sires Emerald and Comme Il Faut also shone at the World Young Horse Championships.
