Besides the fact that the Hippomundo Young Horse ranking gives information about the best young horses of the moment, there is much more information to be gathered from this ranking. Today, we were curious to know which stallions are best represented in this ranking.
For this article we have listed the sires of the top 250 five-year-old international show jumpers of the past 365 days (as of 8/6/22). We then divided the sires with two or more offspring into three age categories, 1990-1999, 2000-2009 and 2010-2013. A number of points struck us in the process.
The foundation sires are still in the game
Looking at the group of stallions born in 1990-1999, we see that the foundation sires are still well represented among the current leading young horses. As a matter of fact, the two stallions with the highest number of offspring in the top 250 of this ranking are from this age category. Both Cornet Obolensky and Diamant de Semilly are still popular represented by 16 and 11 offspring respectively. Yet we are still missing two big names in this category, namely the number 1 favourite in auctions Chacco-Blue and Casall ASK.

Clinton & Diamant de Semilly the largest breeding families
The sires with at least two or more offspring in the Hippomundo Young Horse ranking for five-year-olds can largely be divided into four breeding families. The two largest families are those of Clinton and Diamant de Semilly (see the figure below). The stallion with the most offspring in the top 250 also belongs to Clinton's family, namely Cornet Obolensky with 16 offspring. Three sons of Cornet also appeared in this ranking with a large number of offspring. Comme il faut had already eight descendants, Cristallo I five and Cornet's Prinz two. One generation further we find the Comme il faut-son Comilfo Plus Z with two descendants.
Diamant de Semilly himself scores very well in the ranking of leading five-year-old horses of the moment with no fewer than 11 offspring, just like his five sons Dominator 2000 Z, Emerald, Andiamo Semilly, Diarado and Elvis ter Putte who are all doing well. However, Emerald is the only one who can already add an approved son to this list.

In addition to these two lines, two more families emerged. The third family is that of Capitol I. However, especially the younger stallions from this line seem to be more popular than the older ones at the moment. For example, Cicero Z van Paemel and Indret del Maset are grandsons of Capitol I. Carthago Z and Indoctro themselves did not appear once in the top 250. However another son of Capitol I, VDL Cardento, did appear twice in the ranking, as did his two sons Carrera VDL and Grand Slam VDL.
Another important sire is Baloubet du Rouet. Although he was the oldest sire in the top 250, he was still listed twice with his sons Querlybet Hero and Brantzau VDL.

Which young stallions should we keep an eye on?
There are nine stallions in the youngest age category, of which Kannatol(by Kannan) is the youngest at 9 years old, followed by the 10-year-old Greco Sitte (by Button Sitte). The young stallion that stands out the most among the five-year-olds is the stallion Dominator 2000 Z with no fewer than eight offspring. Dominator Z was born in 2010 and like his sire shows that he passes on his excellent genes to his offspring.
Three stallions already have three international 5-yr-old offspring in the top 250: Andiamo Semilly, Grandorado TN and Global Express.

Most stallions fall into the middle category of 2000-2009. No fewer than 22 sires had two offspring or more. The previously discussed Emerald and Comme il faut are in the lead with eight offspring.
