What actually is a Black Type pedigree?

Posted on 18 Feb 2021 by Judith Werner

Hippomundo offers a broad amount of valuable data and facts about the national and international sport, but we are most commonly known for providing pedigrees. Specific information about a particular horse's siblings, motherline or offspring is readily available to all breeders, riders, owners or just enthusiasts on our website in the form of a genealogical pedigree.

Besides the usual pedigree, Hippomundo also provides special information: the so-called Black Type pedigrees.

What classifies a horse as Black Type?

In showjumping a Black Type horse is a horse who has completed a class of 1.45m or higher in National (NSJ) or International (ISJ) competition at least once.

In eventing a Black Type horse is a horse who has completed at least one international eventing competition of 3* level (IEV 3*) or higher

In dressage the minimum level to be a Black Type dressage horse is participating in International Dressage Big Tour classes (IDR BT)

Names of a horse's direct parents are found in the performance pedigree, which will appear on the top half of the page when searching a particular horse. Additional information about (full) siblings and motherlines up to the fourth degree are listed below the performance pedigree. Here, Black Type horses will be displayed in bold font.

For example, let's take a look at the pedigree of Comme Il Faut. Comme Il Faut's mother is Ratina Z, who competed at 1.60m level, which makes her a Black Type horse and is therefore written in bold font. Other Black Type horses from Comme Il Faut's motherline include Crown Z, Treasure Z, Sterrehof's Cayetano and many, many others.
