Comparing sires: two full brothers & a father-son duo

Posted on 28 Feb 2023 by Charlotte Smet

Breeding has become an increasingly international affair with a wide selection of stallions available across the world. The flip side is that it can seem overwhelming for the breeder to choose the right stallion for their mare as it can be difficult to accurately compare stallions. When the marketing of these stallions is stripped away, all that is left are the numbers. Hippomundo's Stallion Comparison tool uses its data to place two stallions' numbers and statistics side by side to give you a clear view of their differences and similarities.

Today, we will compare the two full siblings Elvis Ter Putte and Favorit ASK, as well as the father-son duo Ogano Sitte and his most successful product, Aganix du Seigneur.

Elvis ter Putte versus Favorit ASK

Elvis ter Putte and Favorit ASK are two full brothers, products of the combination between the stallion Diamant de Semilly and Ukase ter Putte, mare by Darco. Elvis ter Putte was born in 2004 and competed in the sport up until 1.60m under the saddle of Karline de Brabander. The pair added several podium places in 2* and 3* Grand Prix to their record.

Favorit ASK's sports career was slightly less extensive, yet he did compete up to 1.45m level under the saddle of both Karen Møller Rohde and Søren Møller Rohde.

As you can see from the Stallion Comparison report, Elvis ter Putte has sired significantly more offspring than his brother. With 388 young products and 835 older products in the Hippomundo database, he largely outperforms Favorit ASK with his 84 younger and 213 older offspring.

In terms of prize money, however, it is Favorit ASK who surpasses his older brother. While his offspring over the age of eight win on average over €3,380 per horse, Elvis ter Putte's products only take home an average of €2,000.

Both stallions Black Type percentages are very similar, with Elvis ter Putte ever so slightly taking the upperhand with his 13.9% compared to Favorit ASK's 12.7%. As for the distribution of Black Type offspring, a larger percentage of Elvis ter Putte's Black Type offspring reach the highest levels of the sport as 25% compete at 1.55m-1.60m level compared to 11% among Favorit ASK's Black Type offspring.

Ogano Sitte versus Aganix du Seigneur

Ogano Sitte was born in 1998 as a son of Darco and 1.50m mare Ialta Sitte, by Avontuur. He is a product of the BWP Mareline 36 with numerous Black Type horses in the pedigree. Ogano Sitte competed up to 1.60m level in the sport with Dominique Hendrickx. The pair won a CSI4* Grand Prix in Napoli back in 2006. Incidentally, that same year one of his most successful sons was born, Aganix du Seigneur. Under the saddle of Jos Lansink, Aganix du Seigneur competed up to 1.60m but was retired early from his sports career due to injury.

While Ogano Sitte has a much larger pool of older offspring (891) registered in our database, compared to 109 by his son, Aganix du Seigneur has proven to be a popular choice for breeders in the last couple of years proven by 560 registered offspring aged five to seven in the Hippomundo database.

Looking at the Black Type percentage then, we see the son outperforming the father. While almost 25% of Aganix du Seigneur's products over the age of eight have competed up to 1.45m level, only 17.4% of the Ogano Sitte offspring of that same age category have reached that milestone. The distribution of Black Type offspring however is almost identical for both stallions.
