A dam by For Pleasure: the secret to breeding success?

Posted on 06 Dec 2022 by Charlotte Smet

If you are a breeder with a broodmare by one of these stallions, chances are you could be breeding a star. Hippomundo's Sire of the Dam ranking ranks the most successful damsires in the sport right now. Today, we will discuss the damsires with the highest number of offspring in the sport right now, before we focus our attention on the average amount of prize money won by their offspring since the start of 2022.

Since the start of 2022, just three damsires have seen a total of over 500 offspring compete in international sport. Indoctro is the most prevalent as 538 horses active internationally in 2022 are a product of a dam by Indoctro. Quidam de Revel is also a popular choice for a broodmare. So far this year, a total of 513 products of a dam by Quidam de Revel competed internationally. Diamant de Semilly just about gets to join the '500 Club' with exactly 500 horses out of a mare by Diamant active in sport today.

In terms of prize money won, we see For Pleasure rise to the top of the Sire of the Dam ranking. In total 222 products out of a mare by For Pleasure competed internationally in sport and managed to collect a total winning sum of over three million euros. With an average amount of over €14,000 per horse won, For Pleasure largely takes the lead. For Pleasure sired the dam of 2022's leading showjumper, Killer Queen VDM. Also Elektric Blue P, Brooklyn Heights and last Sunday's La Coruna World Cup winner Messi van 't Ruytershof are all products of a dam by For Pleasure.

This year is not the first year For Pleasure takes the lead in the Hippomundo Sire of the Dam ranking. As a matter of fact, the Hannoverian sire has been spearheading the ranking since 2020. Also in the overall ranking, taking into consideration international results since the start of 2015, For Pleasure has been largely outranking his peers. Horses such as Vagabond de la Pomme, Vivaldi du Theil and Hello Shelby have been great representatives of their grandsire throughout the years.

With only half the amount of offspring active in sport this year compared to For Pleasure, Cruising still manages to occupy the runner-up position. Exactly 107 horses out of a mare by Cruising competed internationally in 2022 so far, winning an average amount of over €8,000 each. James Kann Cruz who, under Shane Sweetnam, helped Team Ireland win the Nations Cup on home soil in Dublin, is a product of a dam by Cruising, just like ABC Quantum Cruise.

A daughter of Nabab de Reve also seems to be a good choice for a broodmare. In 2022, 299 horses out of a dam by Nabab de Reve competed in international sport, winning an average amount of around €7,500 each. Six of those have won over €100,000 so far this year, led by Mumbai, winner of the LGCT Grand Prix of Rome earlier this season under the saddle of Christian Kukuk. Also MoM's Toupie de la Roque, Fiumicino van de Kalevallei, Mosito van het Hellehof, Nikolaj de Music and Darry Lou were born from a mare by Nabab de Reve.
