While we often focus on younger horses in our sport, today we want to direct the attention to the horses born in 2005, based on their international results in 2022. These horses are now 17 years old and have already had extensive and successful careers in the sport. Although some horses in this ranking might have recently retired, others continue to perform in the showjumping ring. Let us take a look at the most successful 17-year-old horses of the past year.
The highest-earning 17-year-old so far this year is the Selle Francais gelding Robin de Ponthual. Since the start of 2022, the son of Elf d'Or has won almost €154,000 in international competition with US rider Schuyler Riley in the saddle. The pair won the CSI4* Grand Prix of Upperville back in June and one month later also took victory in the CSI2* Grand Prix in Traverse City. Just last week, the pair was in Bridgehampton, where they finished 8th in the CSI5* Grand Prix there. Robin de Ponthual was bred in France by Pierre Puisset.
Casall has collected over €114,000 in prize money since the start of the year with US rider Ali Wolff in the saddle. Named after his father, Casall ASK, the Holsteiner gelding was victorious in his last outing in the CSI3* Grand Prix of Traverse City back in July. Back in February, the pair also managed to win a 1.55m class in a 3* competition in Wellington. Casall was bred in Germany by Manfred Birchler.
Guy Williams' longtime partner Rouge de Ravel completes the top three with a total win sum of almost €89,000. The Selle Francais stallion has already won 8 1.45m-1.50m classes this year, which offers the son of Ultimo van ter Moude a winning percentage of over 17%. Rouge de Ravel was bred in France by Priscilla Pottier Glaser & Jean-Noel Pottier.
