The first editon of the World Championships Show Jumping took place in Paris (France) in1953 and untill 1956 held every year. From 1960 they are held every four years halfway between sets of consecutive Summer Olympic Games. From 1990 untill 2018 the championships were part of the World Equestrian Games.
Untill 1974 only individual championships were held and men and women had seperate championships. In 1978 was the team competition held for the first time and competed men and women together in one championship.
