The evolution of foal prices

Posted on 14 Oct 2024 by Marthe Van Gorp

In this article we discuss the evolution of foal prices. We can examine these developments based on the auction prices achieved by the different foals. We have and use data for this since 2015 and then collected them by stallion. In this analysis, we focus on both the general trends, and the outliers in a positive or negative sense.

Strong overall decrease

If we look at the available results in an objective manner, a very clear trend immediately stands out. Until the year 2021, most stallions experienced a clear increase. The year 2022 became a top year for most of the stallions, but during the last two years a strong decrease in price can be noticed. People clearly had less to spare for an auction foal during the last two years.

The negative and positive outliers

There are also a few underlying trends that stand out when we look at the stallions separately.

What stands out is that it is mainly the prices of foals by older stallions that are falling sharply. The average price for a foal of, for example, Cornet Obolensky, Chacco Blue and Emerald van't Ruytershof is around 20,000 euros this year while in 2022 it was still above 30,000.

Younger stallions such as Ermitage Kalone, Pegase van't Ruytershof, Dourkhan Hero Z and Uricas van de Kattenvennen could then again all record an increase in the last two years.

Some very notable positive outliers include Toulon, Comme il Faut, Foncetti van de Heffinck, Quel Homme de Hus, Balou du Rouet, VDL Cardento, Vigo d'Arsouilles and Mylord Carthago.

Stallions that recorded strong declines are Chacco-Blue, Cornet Obolensky, Casall ASK, Cicero van Paemel Z, Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z and Halifax van het Kluizebos.

Ranking based on total revenue

In first place is Chacco-Blue (Chambertin x Contender, Meckl) with total proceeds of €10,706,424 since 2015.

Second place goes to Emerald van't Ruytershof (Diamant de Semilly x Carthago Z, BWP) with total proceeds of €7,861,101 since 2015.

The final scaffold of the podium is for Cornet Obolensky (Clinton x Heartbreaker, BWP) with earnings of €7,342,671 since 2015.

This puts them well in the lead and it will certainly be a long time before these three stallions are overtaken in the rankings.

Ranking based on average revenue

When we establish a ranking based on average proceeds we immediately get a very different result.

Carthago Z (Capitol I x Calando I, Holst) is well in the lead with an average price of €38,452 and this while only 24 foals by this stallion have been sold at auctions since 2015.

In second place we find Heartbreaker (Nimmerdor x Silvano, KWPN) with an average proceeds of €35,328 per foal since 2015.

Chacco-Blue (Chambertin x Contender, Meckl) again completes the podium with an average price of €31,770 since 2015.
