Ten years of GP Success: The evolution of winners (Part I)

Posted on 03 Jun 2025 by redactie Hippomundo

Grand Prix victories are the crowning glory in international show jumping. But behind every winning combination is a story of breeders, studbooks, sires and riders who have invested years of talent and development. Thanks to Hippomundo's extensive databases, today we can look back at the evolution of GP success through different angles: from the horses themselves to their riders, from the studbooks to the breeders, and not least through the performance of approved stallions and their offspring.

Which lines dominate the highest levels? Which studbooks consistently produce winners? And which riders continue to dominate Grand Prix competitions year after year? We delved into the figures and compiled an overview of who has been most successful over the past ten years. In the first part of this article, we look at riders and sport horses, while part 2 focuses on studbooks, breeders and approved stallions.

GP winners by riders

If we look at the highest level of show jumping - the CSI5* Grand Prix's - we quickly spot some familiar names from the international circuit. Since 2015 until today, there is one rider in particular who can rightfully call himself the absolute GP specialist. Kent Farrington won no less than 28 5* Grand prix's with a winning percentage of 15%. In 2nd place we find Daniel Deusser with 21 wins and a winning percentage of 8%. Martin Fuchs concludes the podium with also 21 victories and a winning percentage of 13%.

In the ranking of 5* Grand prix's, Julien Epaillard is in 10th place, but if you look at the 4, 3 and 2* Grand prix's, you can see that Julien is on the podium in every category. This past weekend in Canteleu he managed to win his 10th 4* Grand Prix! These numbers show not only who won the most often, but more importantly who continued to do so consistently throughout a decade full of talent and evolution. The riders on this list are not only winners, but also masters of management, planning and partnership with their horses.

In the 5* Category, Gazelle wins again with no less than 13 victories at the highest level. in Place 2 and 3 follow Explosion W and Gancia de Muze with 9 GP's each to their name. A remarkable one is Foxy de la Roque! She has a preliminary winning percentage of 100% in 5* GPs.
