While current top-level horse rankings get a lot of attention, it's always worth looking at the next generation. Thanks to its new young-horse rankings, Hippomundo highlights tomorrow’s future talents. Today we met the well-known British rider Laura Renwick. Breeder, owner and rider of NFS Taluga, she enthusiastically told us about her 7-year-old, currently leading Hippomundo’s 7-year-old rankings.
NFS Taluga, a product of Laura Renwick’s breeding
Born in 2019 at New Farm Stables in Essex, England, NFS Taluga is a BE/SIES stallion, a son of Taloubet Z and Beluga (by Heartbreaker). His maternal line is not very extensive, but his dam was already a very good competitor under the saddle of her breeder Laura Renwick (in partnership with her husband) and had a strong broodmare career. Laura tells us:
Beluga was fantastic for me, both as a riding horse and as a broodmare. She still lives at my yard, but we no longer breed from her; she’s simply enjoying her retirement, pampered like the superstar she is!

Beluga, a top performer at 1.50m, has indeed produced 6 known horses (listed on Hippomundo), half of which are already blacktype:
- Arkuga (by Arko III) - HR 85 - He placed 5th in this year’s CSI5* Grand Prix of Calgary (CAN) in June and recently won the CSIO3* Grand Prix of Williamsburg, MI (USA) under the saddle of the canadian rider Sean Jobin.

- Maverick (by Diamant de Semilly) - HLR 53 - He ranked at 1.45m at 7 years old before allowing a young Irish rider Jill Greene to gain experience in junior & young rider classes later in his career
- NFS Corluga (by Cornet Obolensky) - HLR 41 - British champion at 6, he progressed to 1.45m under Laura Renwick’s saddle
A true breakthrough in 2026
Trained from a young age by Laura Renwick, NFS Taluga began international competition at 6, contesting only four events that year. This 2026 season the pair accumulated strong results in the international classes for 7-year-olds, winning three events at the CSI*-YH in Saint-Tropez-Gassin last April. From the end of April, Laura entered him in intermediate classes at CSI3* & 4* events. The pair finished 2nd in a 1.35m at the CSI4* in Montefalco (ITA), 4th in a 1.30m at the CSI4* in Harthill, Bolesworth (GBR), 2nd in a 1.35m at the CSI3* in Chard (GBR) before winning a 1.40m class the following day. At their last international appearance in July 2026, they again placed 2nd in a 1.40m at the CSI2* in Chepstow (GBR). To top it off, NFS Taluga shone at the British 7-year-old championship, winning the first two qualifying rounds.

Laura has nothing but praise for her protégé:
NFS Taluga isn’t the biggest horse, but he doesn’t know that! He has a fantastic character, is very intelligent and understands exactly what we expect of him. He’s naturally quick and careful, and everything has seemed fairly easy for him so far! In his stable he can be a bit grumpy and likes his space (just like his dam), but he loves his work and competing, and always gives his best. This year we won’t go to Lanaken; he will have a break while I take my older horses to Oliva and Valencia. He’ll resume at the start of next year as an 8-year-old and, hopefully, will continue to progress as he has done so far.
With such a season, NFS Taluga’s statistics are excellent. He currently holds a Hippomundo Rating of 55p and leads the Hippomundo 7-year-old ranking

The broodmare: the cornerstone of quality breeding
Laura Renwick and her husband run a small stud. Today they have three broodmares and sometimes a few 4-year-old mares bred before beginning their sporting careers. The couple remain humble and consider themselves very lucky for the success of their breeding program.
With her experience as a breeder, Laura Renwick stresses one thing:
I believe the mare is the most important element in breeding: if you have a quality mare, you’ve already done more than half the job!
