Is Kannan really the Best Sire in 2024?

Chacco Blue tops the Hippomundo Rankings

Last week the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) presented Kannan as the new leader in their famous 'Show Jumping Sire Rankings'. We examine how this result compares with the numbers in the Hippomundo database.

Point System or Verified Data?

The WBFSH uses a points system to compile its rankings. For the stallion rankings, the points of all progeny, as recorded in the WBFSH Breeders' Rankings, are added together to determine the stallion's total score and position. In contrast, Hippomundo bases its rankings on verified data.

Kannan is the stallion with the highest number of registered offspring: 5,845 horses aged 4 years and older. This means that Kannan, logically, often finishes at the top of prizemoney-based rankings, thanks to the large number of his offspring active in the sport.

Sire # 4 y+
Kannan 5845
Diamant de Semilly 4950
Cornet Obolensky 3883

This is also true in the Hippomundo ranking for Approved Stallions based on prizemoney won by their offspring in International competitions. Although here, Diamant de Semilly does better with €5,017,556 earnings from 13,271 starts, versus Kannan whose offspring prizemoney total is €4,279,974 from 16,219 starts.

Chacco Blue: the undisputed leader

However, if we sort this ranking according to average earnings per horse, we get a very different picture and see that the widely-acclaimed Chacco Blue once again takes the top spot.

Rank Sire Earnings Starts Average/horse
1 Chacco Blue €3.803.164 4996 €11.490

% Black Type offspring

Diving into Hippomundo's rankings of Stallions by % Black Type offspring, we get an even clearer and more critical picture of which stallions really excel in sport horse breeding. Again, it is Chacco Blue at the top and we only find Kannan in 34th place (in the list of stallions with a minimum of 100 offspring in international competition).

The comparison between the WBFSH rankings and the Hippomundo analyses clearly shows the importance of looking critically at sire rankings. While Kannan is undoubtedly an influential stallion, the Hippomundo figures show that there is more to stallions than just numbers and prize money. Rankings based on average earnings and percentage of Black Type offspring offer a deeper insight into a stallion's true quality and impact within sport horse breeding. This emphasizes that breeders and investors should not rely solely on one set of rankings results, but consider multiple perspectives to make the best choices for the future.
