Fragance de Chalus is one of those great mares who have played a key role in the development of numerous bloodlines through the production of high-calibre horses. Hippomundo takes a look back at the life of this extraordinary mare.
A pedigree filled with blood.
Fragance de Chalus was born in 1993 in Cher (FRA), at Solange Planson's stud farm. She is the offspring of Jalisco B and Nifrane (by Fury de la Cense). Her dam was descended from the foundation mare of the Chalusse stud farm: Ifrane. She was a retired racehorse who was no longer suitable for her breeder. At the time, he had bred Ifrane with the thoroughbred Drapeau Rouge, producing a foal that he considered unsuitable for racing: Morgat. The irony of fate would have it that this horse went on to win the bronze medal in the team at the Seoul Olympics and become world show jumping champion in the team with Hubert Bourdy (FRA) in 1990.
When Solange Planson acquired Ifrane, she chose to cross her with Fury de la Cense. This union produced Nifrane, who, in addition to Fragance de Chalusse, would go on to produce Lord If de Chalusse, representing Ukraine in the Nations Cup under the saddle of Cassio Rivetti.
Nifrane will also be the dam of blacktype mares such as:
- Ifrane de Chalusse (by Apache d'Adriers): Vulcain de Chalusse (HLR 51 - Level 145); Antigua de Nantuel HLR 82 - Level 150); Folie de Chalusse (HR 49 - Level 150)
- Jifrane de Chalusse: the stallion Newton de Kreisker (Level 145); Nifrane de Kreisker (HLR 102), or the dam of Birmane (eventing champion with Thomas Carlile (FRA)) & Forban de Beliard, ridden by Marie Demonte (FRA) and competing in the 5* Nations Cup
A productive breeding career thanks to embryo transfer
Purchased as a foal by Belgian Joris de Brabander, Fragance de Chalus will focus primarily on breeding alongside her sporting career thanks to embryo transfers. On the track, the mare will compete at 1.45m level after being one of the best of her generation at 4, 5 and 6 years old. The mare, who was highly competitive throughout her career at 1.40m, will continue to compete until the age of 20, this time in amateur events with Joris de Brabander's daughter Karline.
In terms of breeding, Fragance de Chalus was covered before she was even broken in. She produced a total of 47 horses throughout her career, 13 of which were blacktype horses, including 7 approved stallions:
- Joly Mome (by Darco) - Level 1.60m
