The influence of Quidam de Revel

Posted on 24 Aug 2021 by Charlotte Smet

Every now and then, a stallion comes into our sport that leaves a mark for generations. The Selle Francais stallion Quidam de Revel is one of those special sires who has had an enormous impact on the breeding of showjumpers. The Selle Francais stallion was born in 1982 to French breeder Amaury de Broglie as a son of Jalisco B out of a mare by Nankin. With French rider Hervé Godignon in the saddle, Quidam de Revel helped France win the team bronze medal in the 1992 Olympic Games held in Barcelona, while ending up just beside the podium, in fourth place, in the individual ranking.

Quidam de Revel's offspring in the sport

Quidam de Revel's offspring have been exceptionally successful in the sport with 165 recorded descendants competing at 1.60m+ level. Thanks to his offspring, Quidam currently stands in fourth place in the Hippomundo Stallion ranking based on the average amount of prize money won by his offspring ( consult the ranking here). Two of his descendants have surpassed the winning mark of two million euros. Both Sterrehof's Calimero (Marc Houtzager) and Verdi TN (Maikel van der Vleuten) have won more than two million euros in their successful careers.

Sires by or related to Quidam de Revel

Quidam de Revel's progeny have also already proven to be great sires themselves. Out of the top 100 of the 2021 Hippomundo Stallion ranking ( based on total amount of prize money, consult here), ten stallions are direct or indirect products of Quidam de Revel (pictured in blue in the table below) of which four products rank in the top 20.

The highest ranked Quidam de Revel-descendant in this ranking is Nabab de Reve on place eight. Nuance Bleue VDM is Nabab's most successful product so far this year with over €150,000 in winnings under the saddle of Italian rider Lorenzo de Luca. In 11th place, we find Verdi TN whose most profitable product so far this year is Jerome Guéry's Diego. The star-sire of these past Olympic Games Kashmir van Schuttershof is a son of Nabab de Reve and therefore a grandson of Quidam de Revel and currently sports place 15 in the ranking. And who can say Kashmir without mentioning H&M All In, H&M Indiana and Gazelle? Completing the top 20, is another grandson of Quidam de Revel, Luidam whose offspring Javas Miss Jordan, Gemma W and Luikan Q have been performing well this year.

Quidam de Revel as sire of the dam

Not only do horses with Quidam de Revel as a father do well in the sport, Quidam also ranks seventh in the Hippomundo Sire of the Dam ranking ( consult here). This shows that horses that have a mother by Quidam are also pretty successful. Some examples of this are Atome des Etisses (Mylord Carthago), Oak Grove's Enkidu (Ensor VDH Pleville) and Jack van het Dennehof (Toulon).

Although Quidam de Revel was active in our sport more than 20 years ago, he is still very present in the current competition. Both as a sire and as sire of the dam, he has had an incredible influence and even his offspring follow in their father's footsteps as some of the greatest stallions of our time.
