Who are the best breeders in the world?

Posted on 02 Nov 2020 by Charlotte Smet

Hippomundo's breeders ranking offers a clear view on the world's most influential breeders of showjumping horses. Today we take a look at the top 30 breeders with the highest number of breeding products in international competitions over the past 365 days, as well as breeders ranked by the total amount of prize money won by their homebreds.

First of all, we concentrate on the 30 breeders with the highest number of breeding products who were active in the international ring during the past 365 days. Unsurprisingly, the breeder who sticks out is Paul Schockmöhle operating out of his German base, Gestüt Lewitz. An incredible amount of 911 horses bred by Paul Schockmöhle have been active internationally this past year. He is one of four German breeders to make the top 30 list of breeders with the highest number of active showjumpers. To appreciate the magnitude of Schockmöhle's breeding operation, you must know that the runner-up is Belgian breeding stable Stal den Bisschop who saw 78 of their breeding products compete at the international level these past 365 days. The French breeding yard, SCEA Riverland completes the top three as 73 of their breeding products managed to show internationally during this past year.

It is remarkable to note that, out of these 30 breeders, 29 of them are from Western Europe, while all of them originate from just six different countries. Although small, Belgium seems to provide great breeding ground as we see 12 Belgian breeders in the top 30. France, too, is the home to great breeders which is reflected in the Hippomundo breeders ranking as eight French nationals appear in the top 30. Although Germany leads the way in this ranking with the help of Paul Schockemöhle, there are only four different German breeders in the top 30. Additionally we see three Dutch breeders, two British and one Mexican breeder to fill the top 30.

Top 30 (2020-10-31) based on numbers

As the German stud, Gestüt Lewitz, by far has the highest number of breeding products active in the international sport, it may come as no surprise that they also top the total prize money ranking. Paul Schockmöhle's breeding products have won a total amount of €3,277,562 during the past 365 days. It was the Cornet Obolensky son Balou du Reventon who is Schockemöhle's highest earning product by winning €341,822 during the past 365 days with his Irish rider, Darragh Kenny.

Here too, it is the Belgian breeding stable Stal den Bisschop who follows up in second place as the 'van den Bisschop'-horses won a total amount of €1,412,694 this past year. Notably though, Stal den Bisschop's breeding products earned on average €18,112, whereas Paul Schockemöhle's homebreds only gained an average of €3,597. It is the Larino-mare, Jasmien vd Bisschop, who is the highest earning athlete for Stal den Bisschop, as she won a total amount of €1,131,581 this past year. Dutch breeder, G.W. Klerks completes the top three as their breeding products have received €1,029,482 in prize money, €1,029,057 of which has been won by the Namelus R- son, Christian K under the saddle of Swedish rider, Peder Fredricson.

Top 30 (2020-10-31) based on prizemoney

Once more, we see mainly European countries in this top 30 ranking, although now eight different nationalities are represented. Belgium seems to be the centre for showjumping breeding, as one third of the top 30 breeders are Belgian. Germany proves to be more successful in prize money than in quantity with eight representatives in the top 30. The Netherlands also return in this list with five breeders, whereas only four French breeders manage to make the top 30. Mexican breeding stable La Silla takes up one place in the top 30, just as one Italian and one Polish breeder. Western Europe repeatedly confirms to be the centre for the breeding of high level showjumping horses with Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France leading the way.
