In modern showjumping breeding, rankings are often dominated by prize money, championship results or the next Grand Prix superstar. But another statistic may be even more revealing when evaluating the real influence of a stallion: the number of offspring competing in international sport.
Because producing one exceptional horse is impressive. Producing hundreds of horses capable of jumping internationally year after year? That is what truly defines a breeding phenomenon.
The latest Hippomundo statistics reveal exactly which stallions currently dominate the international sport scene through sheer volume of competitive offspring. And perhaps even more interesting: the ranking also highlights which bloodlines are reproducing themselves generation after generation.

The stallions that built modern showjumping
At the very top we find three names that have completely shaped modern jumping breeding over the past two decades: Kannan, Diamant de Semilly and Cornet Obolensky.
Together, they account for more than 40,000 international starts and have produced an enormous population of successful sport horses all over the world. Yet each of them represents a very different type of influence on modern breeding.
Kannan perhaps remains the ultimate symbol of reliability. His offspring are known for their mentality, rideability and consistency. Breeders worldwide still trust him because his horses repeatedly prove themselves at every level of the sport. Very few stallions maintain this level of relevance for such a long period.
Diamant de Semilly, on the other hand, became synonymous with power, scope and competitive mentality. What makes his impact even more remarkable is how strongly his sons are now continuing the dynasty themselves. Stallions like Emerald and Dominator 2000 Z are already establishing themselves as elite sires, proving that the Diamant influence has evolved into a true breeding empire.
Meanwhile, Cornet Obolensky fundamentally changed the modern sport horse type. His offspring brought lighter models, quicker reflexes and extreme carefulness into international sport. The rise of sons such as Comme il faut suggests that Cornet’s influence may still only be in its second generation of dominance.

The new generation is already taking over
One of the most fascinating conclusions from the rankings is how quickly the younger generation of sires is climbing toward the very top.
Emerald and Comme il Faut are the perfect examples. Both are still relatively young compared to the established legends above them, yet they already rank among the most influential sires worldwide.
What stands out especially are their efficiency statistics. Emerald records an exceptional 34.0% placing ratio, while Comme il Faut reaches an astonishing 35.7% — one of the highest percentages in the entire ranking.
These numbers suggest that their offspring are not simply reaching international sport in large numbers; they are consistently competitive once they get there.
The same trend can be seen with younger rising stars such as Chacoon Blue and Dominator 2000 Z. Despite being at a much earlier stage of their breeding careers, both already produce impressive volumes of international horses.
That is particularly striking because modern breeding has become far more selective and competitive than it was twenty years ago. Producing large numbers of international horses today requires an extraordinary level of genetic consistency.
Belgian breeding continues to dominate
Another major takeaway from the ranking is the continued dominance of Belgian bloodlines in international sport.
Stallions such as:
continue to appear prominently in the global statistics.
Belgian breeding has increasingly specialized in producing modern blood-type jumpers: horses with carefulness, reflexes, athleticism and commercial appeal. The rankings confirm that these qualities are exactly what today’s international sport demands.
Modern breeding is becoming dynasty-driven
Perhaps the most interesting evolution of all is how concentrated modern breeding has become around a relatively small group of elite bloodlines.
Cornet Obolensky produces Comme il Faut. Diamant de Semilly produces Emerald and Dominator. Emerald is now becoming a leading sire himself. Balou du Rouet continues through countless modern descendants.
The same names continue to return at every level of the sport and breeding rankings.
And that may ultimately be the clearest definition of a true top sire: not producing one superstar, but creating an entire international population of competitive sport horses capable of reproducing those qualities again in the next generation.
