A tribute to Canturo

Posted on 02 Mar 2022 by Charlotte Smet

The beginning of 2022 has been sadly tainted by the deaths of some of the industry's greatest sires. After the passing of Diamant de Semilly a couple of weeks ago, Haras du Bois Margot has announced the passing of the great stallion Canturo last week.

Hippomundo would like to take a look back at Canturo's greatest achievements in the sport and in breeding.

German origin

Canturo is a Holsteiner stallion who was born in 1995 to breeder Herbert Diederich as a son of Cantus out of Fara, a mare by Calando I.

The full sister to Fara is Lacanda who produced the mare Parlanda who is the dam of Captain Carlos (by Corrado I) who competes at 1.60m under the saddle of German rider Andreas Knipling and also the dam of Captain Conner(by Connor) who runs at 1.45m under the saddle of Matteo Zamana (ITA).

Canturo's fourth dam, Estrella, produced the mare Manolito who is the dam to Sapphire who performed well in the 2000's placing regularly in the CSI4* GP's under the saddle of Puerto Rican rider Mark Watring.

An Olympic horse under Brazilian colours.

Canturo was ridden by the Brazilian Bernardo Alves throughout his career at the highest level. Canturo achieved numerous placings in the most prestigious Grand Prix with victories in the Grand Prix of Spruce Meadows, Calgary in 2004 and another win in the World Cup in 2005 at the same venue. He also won CSI4* Grand Prix of Madrid in 2005 and had several top five Grand Prix placings in Mechelen, Aachen, Rotterdam, Wiesbaden and many others.

The pair was a part of the Brazilian Olympic team in Athens in 2004 and competed at the World Championships in Aachen in 2006, where they finished 12th individually.

A sire of many performers and stallions

Approved by many studbooks: Holstein, Hannover, OS, SBS and Selle Français, Canturo has produced many high performance horses. Hippomundo's database has a total of 986 registered offspring off Canturo.

Zypria S N.O.P. (out of a dam by Lux Z) helped the Netherlands to multiple podium finishes in Nations Cups under the saddle of Dutch rider Willem Greve. The pair was also a part of the Olympic team in Tokyo last summer.

The stallion Good Luck, out of a mare by Furioso II, was also successful at the highest level of our sport. Under the saddle of Irish rider Cian O'Connor, Good Luck was a part of the winning Irish team at the European Championships in Göteborg and of the Irish team at the WEG in Tryon one year later where the pair finished 13th individually.

Other successful Canturo descendants are Granturo, RPM Canturado, Gomes de Wiqui and many others.

Among the 986 horses listed in the Hippomundo database, Canturo has also produced 47 approved stallions. Canstakko, Good Luck, Camargo 2, Can Ya Makan, Isidoor van de Helle, Canturano I among many others.
